Allready one month the Fyra Hi-speed train is being tested between Amstedam and Rotterdam. At the moment the train reaches a top speed of 160 km/h...still. From December the speed will increased to 250 km/h. (source: http://www.eu-digest.com/2009/07/airrail-news-netherlands-new-fyra-high.html)
Horizontaly the track is positioned like expected: an almost straight line between A and B.
In this case A and B are Schiphol and Rotterdam, because between Schiphol and Amsterdam the train runs still over old trajectory with more and short curves and lower speed.
But amazing is how the track is woven vertically through the existing flat landscape. For reasons of crossing, undergoing, politeness to it's surrounding and even hiding, this hi-speed track dances up and down! The result is a beautiful section with a high amount of 'mountains' and 'valleys' in a relatively short distance of 50 km between Schiphol and Rotterdam. The diagram below shows the length of the track with exaggerated the heights to make the vertical alignment clear.
Are you traveling by hi-speed? Don't miss the view at the highest top in the section. This gives a beautiful view over an adjacent little glasshouse village. A glimp of the future? This village is located close to Zoetermeer.
