Yesterday we received from a Chinese colleague a Mooncake. This is for celebrating Zhongqiu which is also called the Mid-Autumn Festival and which was held this weekend (October 3rd and 4th).It falls together with one of the Equinoxes of the solar calendar. In the Chinese calendar this is the 15th day of the eight month, when moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. Day and night are of equal length.
Another Equinox is Nowruz. See earlier posting http://www.supernice.eu/2009/03/happy-new-year.html
